Nicholson River Holiday Park is conveniently located between Bairnsdale and Bruthen, offering a variety of accommodation options right next to the trail. Step off the track after a day’s worth of exploring and relax at our affordable, comfortable and family-friendly park.

History of the rail trail

This trail marks the original route of a train track beginning in Bairnsdale, which was first constructed in 1888; the line was extended to Orbost in 1916 and continued to operate until it was finally closed in 1987. Since then, the track infrastructure has been removed and the trail has become a popular cycling route for numerous reasons:

  • Passes through diverse scenery including forest and farmland
  • Perfect for short day trips or multi-day tours
  • Home to a variety of flora and fauna
  • Contains a number of picturesque timber rail bridges
  • Occasional views of the Gippsland Lakes
  • Dotted with towns offering meals and supplies

With 96kms of forest, farmland and lake views, there is simply no better way to spend time away from routine, responsibility and the daily grind.
